Chapter 10

“Okay, now you’re getting ridiculous,” Linda said.

“Are we?” Taylor brought his hand to his temple as if he were Columbo. “Where exactly were you last night, Linda?”

“I refuse to answer that question.”

“I kinda think you have to, Linda,” Danny said.

Linda exhaled loudly. “Where do you think I was? I was shmoozing with Kai’s Krew until about ten or eleven p.m., and then I was sleeping in front of the house where hundreds of people saw me.”

“You were there all night?” I asked.

Everyone looked at me, and that’s when I realized the words had come out of my mouth. Oh no. Was I sleuthing?

“You think my mother killed me?” Kai asked.

I tried to shrug imperceptibly so that no one would notice, but no one was looking at me anyway. Everyone was waiting to hear Linda’s answer to my question.

“Yes, I was there, in front of the house, all night.” Linda said. “Except …”

“Aha!” Miltos said.

“Give it a rest, Miltos,” Linda said. “I was going to say, except to go to the bathroom.”

But Miltos was right. In addition to having a motive—although I agreed with Linda that it was weak—she also had opportunity.

“And where did you go to the bathroom?” Taylor asked.

“Where do you think? In the porta-potty behind this creepy old house, where everyone was told to go.”

“How long were you gone from your post?” Sam asked.

“You too?” Linda said. “You think I killed my own son?”

“It doesn’t feel so great, Linda, to be accused of hurting someone you love, does it?”

Linda shook her head. “I don’t know … I was gone, maybe, fifteen minutes.”

“Fifteen minutes to pee?” Taylor said.

“Very suspicious,” Miltos said. “Most mammals—humans included—urinate in about twenty seconds. And that’s regardless of their size.”

“I don’t need a science lesson, Miltos,” Linda said.

“Yeah, but you might need a lawyer,” Taylor said.

“Listen to yourselves!” Linda said. “You’re not thinking clearly. Who else is Kai supposed to leave everything to? You, Danny? Who just called him annoying? You, Miltos? You would forget your own head if it wasn’t attached to your body. For all Kai’s life, it’s been just me and him. The two of us. We’re all we had. Each other. If something happened to me, Kai would have gotten everything I have. And, of course, vice versa. You’re all letting your imaginations run wild. And have seen too many cop shows.”

“Maybe so, but there’s been one person telling us that we can’t go to the police, and it’s the one person who has a motive,” Stephanie said.

“What about Sam?” Linda pointed her finger. “You found her baseball cap upstairs.”

“Okay, so now you’re throwing me under the bus?” Sam asked. “Maybe you put it there.”

“That’s it. I’m leaving,” Stephanie said.

“Open that door, and I’ll sue you!” Linda said with an intensity that startled me. And I wasn’t the only one. The room got very quiet.

Stephanie crossed her arms. “I thought you weren’t holding me hostage?”

“I’m not, but …” Linda looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath. “I just—”

“Holy cow!” Vince said.
